Manchester United fear missing out on PSG striker Edinson Cavani.
The Mail on Sunday says the situation regarding Cavani remains in the balance.
United have trailed Cavani for a long time, even before Van Gaal arrived, but the Uruguayan international keeps sending out mixed messages about his future.
That is perhaps because Chelsea’s interest in the striker re-surfaced last week even though Jose Mourinho has said he has completed transfer business.

Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling is determined not to be kicked out of the game.
Sterling was the one England player who returned from their World Cup failure in Brazil with his stock greatly enhanced and the teenage star will carry the hopes of Liverpool fans still grieving the loss of Luis Suarez.
"The physical side is part of the game,' said Sterling to the Daily Mail.

"You are going to get defenders who want to let you know they are there, make you feel their presence.
"I've got to keep my temper, stay calm and try to play the game the way I think it should be played. If I can play well and score, they will know it's not all about being physical.
"I will definitely be keeping a cool temperament and doing my best for the team."

Real Madrid fear Sami Khedira digging in his heels this month.
The Daily Star Sunday says Real believe Khedira is ready to run down his contract and join Chelsea next summer for FREE.
That would be a massive blow to Arsenal, who were ready to spend £24million on Khedira this summer but baulked at his £150k-a-week wages.
But it would represent a huge coup for Jose Mourinho, who managed Khedira, 27, at the Bernabeu and is eager to be reunited with him.
The Special One insists Chelsea’s transfer dealings are over this summer but landing the midfielder on a free in 12 months’ time would represent excellent business.

Arsenal are in talks with Sporting Lisbon for William Carvalho.
Record says Sporting have officially put Carvalho up for sale.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger had a £24m bid for the Portugal star rejected last week by Sporting, who insisted that Carvalho would not be sold unless his £37m buy-out clause was met.
But there position has now softened and the Gunners are now back in for the 22-year-old - and could sign him by the end of the week.
Carvalho has also attracted interest from Manchester United this summer.
Reports last month suggested that new Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal was eager to sign the holding midfielder, but so far United have not made an official approach for the Portuguese international.

Wenger - My wonderful memories of Monaco

Wenger - My wonderful memories of Monaco
Arsène Wenger in his days at Monaco
Arsène Wenger has reflected on the “wonderful memories” from his time at AS Monaco ahead of Arsenal’s Emirates Cup clash against his old club.
The Frenchman took charge of Monaco in 1987 and won the Ligue 1 title and the Coupe de France during his seven-year spell in the principality.
Wenger admits the role had its challenges, but he remains proud of his achievements during his time in the hotseat.

“I have some wonderful memories of my time at AS Monaco,” he told the official Emirates Cup programme. “We competed every year for the championship and won the title and the cup.

“When I arrived there, AS Monaco had never passed the first round of the European Cup and we went to the final of the Cup Winners’ Cup and the semi-finals of the Champions League. These are big memories because before it was a club who was non-existent in Europe.
“Despite the fact Monaco hadn’t achieved too much when I went there, it was still a demanding job. You are representing a country and also people are well-off there - and people who are well-off are demanding!
“It was very interesting for me because it was my first experience at a big club. It went well and I had a good relationship there - I’m happy to see the club back at the top level.”
Wenger expects the current AS Monaco side to provide a stern challenge for the Gunners in the closing game of the Emirates Cup on Sunday.
“They have a very high-quality squad at the moment,” he said. “They buy players and look like they are in a run to beat PSG. It’s not a team you want to play.
“They have many stand-out performers, Falcao was a massive signing last year and Kondogbia is a very interesting player because he’s a left-footed midfielder and one of the promising stars, just behind Pogba, in the French national team.”

Wenger on Sanogo, Campbell and Alexis

Arsène Wenger spoke to the media after his side beat Benfica in the Emirates Cup on Saturday afternoon. Here is what he had to say:
on Sanogo's four goals…
That's football. It always surprises you.
on whether the win is a sign of things to come…
I think it's very difficult to draw any conclusions like that. Benfica might be in a different level of preparation. We are not completely ready, what is important is that during important spells of the game we played the way we wanted to play football - that is the most positive thing. Our game is based on movement, technical skill and togetherness in the final third so overall that's the positive side of our game today.

on Sanogo and Cambpell's potential…
A headache is when they don't play well. We have some decisions to make when everybody plays well, that's true. But when everybody plays well that's what we want. They need to play of course but they need to play here. Sanogo came last year on a free and we worked very hard for six months with him and from January onwards he was slowly getting better. Now that we have worked very hard with him, we want him to stay here.
on Campbell…
Campbell has done very well. I like the way he plays, he's good on the ball, creative and collectively as well he has a good balance between individual skill and collective attitude - that's not easy to find.
on whether there has been any offers for Campbell…
No. There is no reason to let him go.
on whether he is available for a loan deal…
No. I want to keep him.
on Alexis...
He is not fit yet, but he has shown through some runs he will be very dangerous. He can play on the flanks and through the middle. [On Sunday] I will certainly play him on the flank for 45 minutes. He is not fit yet, but in one week he should be much better.
on Sanogo's self-belief...
Sanogo was injured for basically two years before he came to us. If you look at his goal scoring record before he got injured, it is quite frightening. For a while when he came back last season, he could not score. You could see when he scored the first goal today, suddenly they came raining. I especially liked the third goal he scored, it was really the goal of a striker of quality. He has a big future here, or course, he is 21. He has something of Adebayor. He is strong, a strong body, similar strengths [to Adebayor], but as well technical skill.
on Chambers...
I thought he played very well, was intelligent, good decision-making and calm on the ball, good in the air. He is 19 years old, and what he did is very promising. I told you we will have a core of English players, you have to trust me, I will get you slowly a good national team!
on the injuries...
Diaby was not in the squad, he is just going out to practice, but is not injured. Zelalem has no problem, I could just put 22 on the list.
on having too many players...
Yes, but you want me always to buy more. Where do I put them all?
on whether he has made an offer for Sami Khedira…
No.
on enquiring for Khedira...
What is enquire for you?
on Khedira's availablity...
I dont know. If I read the newspapers, he is available.

Sporting Lisbon blasts Tottenham, Dier after confirming move

Sporting Lisbon blasts Tottenham, Dier after confirming move
as_spursplayers
Sporting Lisbon have hit out at the Eric Dier camp after he completed his move to Tottenham yesterday.
Spurs announced on Thursday evening that they had reached an agreement with the Portuguese side, confirming that Dier would complete his move subject to a medical examination.
Sporting have since released a statement on their official website, and have slammed the actions of Dier's father and agent during contract negotiations.
"Sporting Clube de Portugal announces that during [July] the club started negotiations with Eric Dier over the renewal of his contract," read the statement.
"Unexpectedly, Sporting, SAD was confronted by the player's father and official representative with a bid from Tottenham Hotspur, with that bid activating a clause agreed by previous boards of directors for the sale of the player for an amount of €5million or more, unless the personal terms offered as part of the bid are matched.
"Due to the club's current salary policy, the respective balance within the squad and the on-going financial restructuring underway at the club, it was not possible to match the proposed terms.
"Furthermore, Sporting, SAD was also informed that the player did not want to remain with the club even on equal terms and that any equal or improved personal terms would not have been accepted.
"In light of the above, Sporting, SAD announces the complete sale of the economic rights of the player Eric Dier to Tottenham Hotspur for €5milion, without any future rights relative to the player.
"Despite the above mentioned events, Sporting, SAD wishes Eric Dier all the best in his career."

Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo will NOT rule out returning to Manchester United.
Ronaldo was interviewed after training by United legend Paddy Crerand on Friday night for the club’s TV channel MUTV.
Asked if he would ever like to come back to Old Trafford, Ronaldo said: "Well of course, it was one of my favourite clubs.
"Everyone knows that every time when I speak about Real Madrid I should speak about Manchester United.
"I loved it there, I was 18 years old, I win everything there, the people treat me like a god there so I appreciate and the future nobody knows…
"It’s crazy that they still sing my name.
"I remember when we played there against Manchester in the Champions League, they killed me, my heart was so happy, and fantastic moments and I appreciate this club, for me it’s one of the best clubs in the world and I have passion for this club.
"Of course I’m happy at Real Madrid. It’s my home, it’s my club but Manchester treat me unbelievable so we never know."

Wenger: Away from Messi, Alexis will be Arsenal star

Wenger: Away from Messi, Alexis will be Arsenal star

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says Alexis Sanchez can become one of the biggest names on the planet.
The £30million signing from Barcelona is set to make his debut in the Emirates Cup this weekend and, in comparing Sanchez to his former Nou Camp team-mate Neymar, Wenger says the Chilean can become a global star in his own right.
"He’s a good finisher who made a great impression in Italy (with Udinese), I saw him there and he was really outstanding. And then at Barcelona it was a bit more difficult," said Wenger.
"But it’s like you could see with Neymar at Barcelona, because there you have Messi. You see Neymar with Brazil and Neymar with Barcelona and it’s not the same.
"I like the fact he can play left, right, up front and that’s why I went for him. But I took him because he is a player who has the qualities of Walcott, he goes behind the defenders off the ball.
"And with the quality of his runs he can be very important for us. Will he give us an extra dimension? Yes, I think so, and I hope I’m right."

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has admitted his admiration for AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli.
Rodgers says he's a fan of the controversial Italy international, who has been heavily linked with a return to the Premier League this summer.
"Balotelli is a big talent," Rodgers said.
"I saw that in this time at Inter Milan as a young player and obviously going to Manchester City when we had a real close eye on him there.
"He's got all the qualities. He's 6ft 3ins, he's quick, his touch is terrific and he can score goals.
"He went back to Italy to play and he's still so young. If his focus is right, his concentration is right and he leads the lifestyle of a top player then he can play for any team in the world."
